Special Summer Travel Project: Ghana 2019 “The Year of Return”

Through our longtime partner, Amizade Global Service-Learning, Ujamaa is honored to be one of three organizations that is a part of the Hill District Global Education Coalition, providing international learning trips to urban teenagers. This year, we have the privilege and responsibility to mentor 10 young women through a pre-immersion, immersion and post-immersion process related to a 10 day educational program in Ghana, West Africa. This process includes classes prior to travel that focus on the history and impact of slavery and colonization, identity and community; the Ghana trip from June 13-23 with visits to slave castles, women-run businesses, cocoa and palm oil plantations and shea butter factories. When we return back to the Hill District, our 10 students will be strategizing and then executing a community service project. Ujamaa is so excited to offer this opportunity to young women we’ve worked with through our programming over the past few years!
Amizade has helped to cover the cost of travel, lodging and on-the-ground service and learning activities, however there exists a gap in funding for youth and their families acquiring passports, visas, and mandated vaccinations and medical care for travel. Would you consider making a tax-deductible donation to help make this trip a reality for these 10 young women? Invest in these young women, as they will give back to all of us, not just in the form of a powerful service project this year, but a bright future of leadership informed by their global citizenship!
